Website, www.chatboutcleveland.com devoted to Cleveland's Caribbean Life is released.CLEVELAND, OHIO - September 7, 2008 -Locally based, Chat 'Bout Cleveland has launched the website, www.chatboutcleveland.com. The website is the off set of the blog (www.chatboutcleveland.blogspot.com) started in 2006.

Chat 'Bout Cleveland covers Caribbean based events including stage shows, family based activities and other social events. Chat 'Bout Cleveland also features news, interviews, a radio guide, event listings as well as a photo gallery. 'Dancehall Diary' is an additional feature - an online soap opera, which will be updated monthly.

Chat 'Bout Cleveland's overall mission is to: connect Cleveland's online community with Caribbean based businesses and services. "It is our hope to bring a sense of community with the site by encouraging patronage to these Caribbean businesses in the Cleveland area", says Andrea "Drue" Thompson, publisher and editor. "The sole purpose of Chat 'Bout Cleveland is to get the community 'on the same page' so to speak - to create an awareness of these business and events for the people in Cleveland as well as those who visit Cleveland."

To compliment Cleveland's strong Caribbean community, the website will also serve as an opportunity to bring the community presence to the forefront. "We want the Caribbean community in Cleveland to be showcased with the same caliber as other cities with strong on-line communities such as chicagoreggae.com, detroitreggae.com, and pittsburghreggae.net, which have been quite successful." says Tanya Richburg, Editor at Large. "Chat 'Bout Cleveland is confident Cleveland's Caribbean community will join the forefront as well."

Currently, Chat 'Bout Cleveland also has extended its reach to showcase events of other cites such as Columbus, Chicago, Detroit, New York, Pittsburgh, Dayton. Future plans for the website include employment and legal services, business referrals and other community based events.

Board of Directors to be Announced.

Board of Directors to be announced in October:

The Columbus Caribbean Association will be naming its Board of Directors in October. We will release the names of these members after final selection has been made via the web and our newsletter.

Like many non profit organizations the founders usually serve as the Board of directors as well as the " arms and legs" of the organization until they are able to do a diligent search for individuals who can serve as the Board of Directors.

While membership is critical in the longevity of an organization, many would argue that a Board of Directors is the most critical component in the development and maintenance of any successful organization's corporate structure. This is why the founders have taken the time to deliberate about our chosen prospective candidates.

General Membership:

We have had daily inquiries regarding membership. This is exciting ! There are so many people who are wondering how they can officially become members of the Columbus Caribbean Association. Do not worry you will have your chance to do so very soon. It is more than obvious that there a plenty of people who have been waiting and ready to get to work. No week goes by without there being questions about organizing scholarship funds, festivals, fund raising efforts, social events, volunteer efforts and businesses and we think that that is so very encouraging.

This is why this organization is being established in the first place.

So that these goals will be become a viable realities , we think the initial organizing stage should be done in an organized step wise and deliberate fashion that will maximize the chance of total success. We will announce the board next month, then announce the time of our first general meeting shortly there after. Thank you for your patience up to this point.

At this general meeting we will have applications available for members to join. Membership forms will also be available online as well. [pdf and word.doc format] There will be opportunities to be a part of any number of committees , suited to members talents and interests.

We anticipate that the Columbus Caribbean Association will be one of the most successful organization of its kind, not only in Ohio and the midwest but nationwide ! We are doing everything posibble to establish it on the firmest foundation possible.

Till then continue to support Caribbean culture here locally as well as efforts that we promote for the good of the community.

CCA Hurricane Relief Effort Begins

Columbus Caribbean Association Appeals to the local community to help in our attempt to provide Hurricane Relief particularly for Haiti

Three major Tropical storms , two of which were categorized as Hurricanes in in less than 21 days have killed anywhere from 200 - 500 people in, Haiti. The Death toll according to other estimates is expected to rise as efforts to reach all the devastated areas continue. Tropical storms Gustav then Hanna and now Ike have been threatening six island nations in particular, Cuba, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Dominican Republic , Jamaica and Haiti. Of the six the worst have been Turks and Caicos and Haiti. In Turks and Caicos home to 3000 people, nearly every home Grand Turk island was lost . In Haiti well over 11,000 homes in Haiti were lost, hundreds of thousands of people have been directly affected or displaced with and estimated 300,000 of them being children.There are an estimated 70,000 people currently in shelters.
General numbers regarding toll from the various storms are as follows. Gustav: 76 in Haiti; 26 in the U.S. (19 in Louisiana, 4 in Georgia, 3 in Mississippi); 12 in Jamaica; 8 in Dominican Republic Hanna: 167 in Haiti; 2 in Puerto Rico; 1 in Dominican Republic Ike: 58 in Haiti; 1 in Dominican Republic. In the city of Gonaives, Haiti 495 bodies so far and there are 13 people missing.

How To Help

The Columbus Caribbean Association is helping to coordinate Hurricane relief efforts locally in here Columbus , Ohio as well as establishing a ongoing disaster and relief fund. We are asking the Columbus Caribbean community and Community at large to make donations of non perishable goods ie., clothing, blankets, shoes, soap, etc. They can be dropped off at several locations around town : Enas Restaurant, Roots Records and C and L Performance Autos. Non Tax exempt donations can be made also to the Columbus Caribbean Association , and labeled ‘Hurricane relief’ in the form of check or money order if by mail or cash at esignated sites mentioned.

Any monetary donation given will go towards the cost of shipping the non perishable items, 80% of the remaining money after shipping will be sent directed as charity , and distributed among reputable charities . Charities such as the Red Cross for instance have been appealing for funds to assist in relief. A major portion of the funds collected will be given on behalf of the Columbus CAribbean Association to this charity Download pdf

The remaining 20% will stay as an on going part of 'The Columbus Caribbean Hurricane and Disaster relief fund', in anticipation of future and ungoing need.
